This rare Erica heather honey is only found in Greece and parts of Turkey. Also known as Erica verticillata or Autumn Heather because the flower blooms fin Autumn from August to October. In Greece it is called Reikomelo (Reiki honey). It is a dark strongly flavored honey, mildly sweet and high in trace minerals. It crystallizes quickly, within 2 to 3 months of harvest, so is almost always crystallised by the time it arrives in the UK.But this adds to the uniqueness of the honey as it is not a 'sugary' crystallisation but more of a fudge. The color is lighter with crystallization.
Erica Honey is renowned in Greece for its high nutritional value, thanks to its high content of pollen, and its mineral content (silicon, boron and barium). It is a strong tasting honey, with a delicious brandy-ish aroma and a coppery beige colour. The heather flower is very sensitive to weather and production of this honey is very variable. The honey sells rapidly in Greece, as locals buy it up as soon as it is available and store it for later use. So we are delighted to be able to bring this rare, extremely nutritional honey.
